Abstract

This article examines the origin and significance of the battle cry (uran) of the Kazakh Tama clan, associated with the name of Karabura. The author conducts a source-based analysis of written, oral, and ethnographic materials, identifying various versions of the origin of this uran. Particular attention is given to comparing historical accounts of Karabura with Kazakh genealogical traditions and legends widespread across different regions. The study demonstrates that the image of Karabura was shaped by both ethnic and religious factors, which influenced his veneration in folk tradition. Based on the analysis of written sources, a hypothesis is proposed regarding a connection between Karabura and one of the emirs of the Ulus of Jochi.
