THE IMAGE OF BOPAI KHANYM KASYMKYZY IN HISTORY: SOURCE ANALYSIS
Abstract
Annotation. Regardless of the historical event in question, the role of women in Kazakh history has often been relegated to the periphery. In the patriarchal structure of Kazakh society, the valor of warriors and generals was immortalized in legends and songs, while women were confined to domestic roles, focusing on family life and child-rearing. From rulers to ordinary soldiers stationed in the rear, the responsibility of safeguarding the hearth traditionally fell to women. Nonetheless, many Kazakh women have earned respect not only within their families but also broader societal recognition. This article is dedicated to Bopai Khanim Kasymkyzy, a woman who commanded both honor and authority. Through this research, the historical figure of Bopai Khanim is examined, providing a clearer distinction between myth and reality. Her pivotal role in the national liberation movement led by Kenesary Khan is also explored. The findings underscore that Bopai’s authority in the Kazakh steppe was rooted in her innate intelligence and bold character. Certainly, her noble lineage, as a descendant of the Khan family "Tore," and her status as a "khanim" contributed significantly to her influence. Moreover, a key contribution of this article lies in its presentation of new insights into the fate of Bopai Khanim’s family. For the first time, her shezhire is published, listing the names of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren from her six sons.
