Abstract

Аbstract.  The special place of structured cultural function in medieval Spain began during the Umayyad period. The article examines the features of cultural development during the reign of the Umayyad leader Abd ar-Rahman III and his Jewish vizier. The successes of Abd ar-Rahman III attracted the attention of all Europe, and the caliph, with his wise policies, gained even more universal respect. European kings, recognizing the power of Abd ar-Rahman III, sent embassies to him with requests to conclude alliances. Arab Spain became the political and cultural center of Europe. He cared about the development of culture and strengthening political power by patronizing the development of agriculture, crafts, trade, literature and education. Under him, large monuments of art were created in the capital and in other cities. He had an approach to governance that included all populations of his kingdom. His consistency in management and length of reign contributed to his success. Abd ar-Rahman III realized that he needed to be careful when conducting public affairs with other countries that were not Muslim. He knew that this would upset some conservative Muslim sentiments in al-Andalus. This is why he included trusted Christians and Jews in his diplomatic corps. The Jewish community of Cordoba flourished especially after the declaration of an independent caliphate. Vizier Hasdai ibn Shaprut established connections with his fellow believers in the East, and thanks to him, many Jewish poets, grammarians and scholars moved to Cordoba. As a result of the cooperation of the latter, a higher theological school was organized. The purpose of this article is to examine the factors that made possible cultural flourishing among Muslims, Jews, and Christians in tenth-century Islamic Spain during the reign of the Umayyad Muslim leader Abd al-Rahman III and his Jewish vizier Hasdai ibn Shaprut.
